Couples Therapy in Denver & Greenwood Village
You love each other. But you miss feeling close.
When every conversation turns into the same fight—or silence—it can start to feel like you're losing the relationship you once had.
Maybe you're stuck in the same arguments. Maybe one of you reaches for connection while the other pulls away. Maybe you've stopped fighting altogether and simply feel distant.
You don't have to figure this out on your own.
Shoshana Ort, LCSW provides warm, attachment-based couples therapy to help partners understand the cycle they're caught in, feel more emotionally safe with each other, and find their way back to connection.

You may love each other deeply — and still feel stuck
Couples rarely come to therapy because they don't care about each other. More often, they care deeply and simply don't know how to get out of the pattern they're caught in.
- “We keep having the same argument over and over.”
- “One of us reaches for connection while the other shuts down.”
- “We feel more like roommates than partners.”
- “We can't talk about difficult things without everything escalating.”
- “We feel lonely even when we're together.”
- “We've lost the closeness, affection, or intimacy we used to have.”
- “We understand the problem — but can't seem to change the pattern.”
- “We're wondering whether our relationship can actually get better.”
- “We're considering separation and don't know what comes next.”
- “We love each other and want to strengthen our relationship before things get worse.”
If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone — and your relationship isn't necessarily broken.
Real couples. Real change.
You don't have to take my word for it. Here's what couples I've worked with have experienced.
My wife and I worked with Shoshana for over a year and it was truly a life changing experience. The first breakthrough was when Shoshana was able to help us understand our 'couples dance.' She has the ability to investigate a situation and get us to discover the deeper emotions. I have noticed that we are now able to 'slow down time' during arguments. We can recognize our cycle as it happens and successfully break it. Shoshana possesses a remarkable balance of a calming presence and the ability to challenge one to dig deeper.
Shoshana is a phenomenal therapist and I strongly recommend her to anyone! My partner and I sought her out for couples therapy because she uses EFT and we could not have lucked out more. She strikes the perfect balance of being direct and challenging, while also compassionate and supporting. We now communicate more openly, understand each other more deeply, and handle conflict in ways that bring us closer together. I've grown more in one year working with her than I had in ten years of prior individual therapy.
It's not about who's right. It's about the cycle you're caught in.
When couples are hurting, it's easy to see the other person as the problem.
- One partner reaches for connection
- The other pulls away
- One feels ignored
- The other feels criticized
- One pushes harder
- The other withdraws further
And the more the pattern repeats, the more alone both people can feel.
Underneath the arguments — whether about communication, parenting, intimacy, or daily stress — are deeper emotional needs: to feel seen, valued, and important to each other.
The problem isn't that either of you is broken. The problem is the cycle you've become trapped in.
Emotionally Focused Therapy helps couples slow this cycle down, understand what is happening underneath the conflict, and begin responding to one another in new ways.
Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples
EFT is an attachment-based, research-backed approach that helps couples understand the emotional patterns underneath their conflict. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and Dr. Les Greenberg, it's grounded in attachment science — the understanding that we are wired for connection, closeness, and emotional safety in our relationships.
Instead of simply teaching communication techniques, we look at what happens between you when you feel hurt, rejected, criticized, ignored, or afraid of losing connection.
Together, we slow those moments down and begin creating new ways of reaching for and responding to each other.
In my work with couples, EFT is not just a model — it's how I help partners move out of disconnection and back into feeling emotionally safe, understood, and connected. If you'd like a fuller explanation, I've written a plain-language guide to Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.
What couples therapy with me is actually like
Coming to couples therapy can feel vulnerable — especially when you've been hurting for a while.
You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what to say. You don't need to agree about what's wrong. And you don't need to know how to fix your relationship before you walk through the door.
My role isn't to decide who's right or take sides. My role is to help both of you feel heard, understand the cycle you're caught in, and create a space where you can begin hearing each other differently.
- 01
Understand the cycle
We slow things down and identify the pattern that keeps pulling you apart.
- 02
Go beneath the conflict
We explore the emotions, fears, needs, and longings underneath the reactions.
- 03
Create new ways of connecting
You begin practicing ways of reaching for and responding to one another that create more safety, understanding, and connection.

- Couples struggling with communication

Listening beneath the words
A big part of this process is learning how to 'listen beneath the words' — to hear not just what your partner is saying, but what they're feeling underneath.
As that understanding grows, something begins to shift. Partners often become more open, more responsive, and more compassionate — not because they're trying harder, but because they feel safer. When we feel safe with the person we love, we don't just communicate better — we truly connect.
What begins to change
Over time, many couples begin to notice:
- They're not having the same fights anymore
- They feel more understood instead of misunderstood
- They can talk about hard things without it escalating
- They feel emotionally closer and more connected
- They feel like they're on the same team again
Instead of feeling stuck, things begin to feel possible again.
Couples therapy in Greenwood Village or online
In person in Greenwood Village
My office is at 5200 DTC Parkway, Suite 290, in Greenwood Village (the Denver Tech Center). It's an easy drive for couples from Denver, Centennial, Englewood, Littleton, Aurora, and Lone Tree. Some couples find it helpful to have a dedicated space away from home, where the conversation can feel different from the ones you have at the kitchen table.
Online throughout Colorado and New Jersey
If coming into the office isn't practical, I also offer secure online couples therapy for couples anywhere in Colorado, as well as in New Jersey. Many couples find that online sessions fit more easily into busy work and family schedules — and the work can be just as meaningful. You can read more about how online couples therapy in Colorado works.
Couples sessions are $210 for 50 minutes and $315 for 75 minutes. You can find more on rates and insurance.
Do we have to be in crisis for couples therapy to help?
No. You don't have to wait until your relationship is falling apart to ask for help.
Couples therapy can be helpful when you're stuck in recurring conflict, feeling disconnected, struggling with intimacy, navigating a major transition, or simply wanting to feel closer and more secure together.
What if one partner is more ready than the other?
That's very common. Partners don't always arrive with the same level of hope or readiness, and that's okay — it doesn't mean therapy can't be useful. A free consultation is a low-pressure way to talk through where each of you is and whether working together feels like a good fit. If you're weighing whether to stay together, you can also read about couples therapy before separation or divorce.
Frequently asked questions
What does couples therapy help with?
Couples therapy helps with ongoing conflict, emotional distance, communication that keeps breaking down, loss of intimacy, trust ruptures, and big life transitions. Mostly, it helps you understand the pattern you get caught in so you can find your way back to each other.
How do I know if couples therapy is right for us?
If you keep having the same painful conversations, feel more like roommates than partners, or simply want to feel closer, couples therapy may help. You don't need to be in crisis. A free 15-minute consultation is a good way to see if it feels like a fit.
Can couples therapy help if we keep having the same argument?
Yes. The repeating argument is usually a sign of a deeper cycle between you. We slow it down together, so you can see what each of you is feeling and needing underneath — and respond to each other differently.
What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a research-backed approach to couples therapy grounded in attachment science. It focuses on the emotional patterns between partners and helps you build safety, responsiveness, and connection. Read my guide to EFT for couples.

What happens during the first couples therapy session?
In the first session, we get to know each other, talk about what brought you in, and begin to understand the pattern you've been caught in. There's no pressure to have the right words — that's something we figure out together.
What if my partner isn't sure about couples therapy?
